Killary Harbour/Delphi Adventure Resort

Driving Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way is one of life’s great travel experiences. Some of Ireland’s most spectacular scenery is located in the southwest of the island, and our destination today is the picturesque village of Leenane with its stunning Killary Harbour, situated northwest of Galway. This is a natural fjord, the only one of its kind in Ireland and the extraordinary scenery provides a drive through one of the most unique beautiful landscapes on the planet, something you will never forget.

Before you think Ireland is all about relaxing scenic drives and breathtaking scenery, we want to present another angle to the Irish travel experience…one with excitement and adventure. So, we have started our journey at the Delphi Adventure Resort, about 20 minutes out of Leenane, a beautiful and very comfortable resort-style accommodation option with a lot of activities to do.

The first challenge for some is the rope course; a course built 15 to 20 metres above the ground with some very unique opportunities to have fun -- wild, scary crazy fun.

We tested out the zip-lining course or, more correctly, it tested us! The opportunity to fly along at fast speed a long way off the ground between three runs is exhilarating. We also tried the bridge swing… it’s when you swing off a high bridge and you guessed it – swing.

We were set up with a harness and attacked to the main ropes for safety; it’s obviously very important this far above the ground. The idea of this is to lean out of the edge of the platform –it's a trust exercise. It was terrifying, and fun all at once.

The Adelphi Resort has every kind of adventure from hiking through amazing moors and bogs, to archery, rock wall climbing, mountain biking and even a BMX course.

For others, the spa is the other option they come for, and a seaweed bath is an experience to behold. The spa looks like a great option but we wanted to try something a little more challenging for first – bog challenge.

The idea of this is you work your way through a bog course -- you’re in wet suits and it's a lot of fun… albeit dirty fun…very, very muddy fun.

The bog challenge involves slipping and sliding and avoiding falling into the bog holes, which in some cases are quite deep. This isn’t everyone’s idea off fun but to be honest, we love it… although we were wiping bog out of orifices for a few days…

After an exhilarating afternoon walking the bog course, it’s time to wash the mud off, in the stream amongst the heath… another authentic Irish experience, something you can enjoy, if you stay at the Delphi Adventure resort. Remember, you can go as hard or relaxed as you want. Adventure Irish style is a lot of fun…
