Chiang Mai Zoo is a Zoo with a difference; while this attraction is open during the day the real action happens at night during the ‘Predator Prowl’ and 'Savannah Safari', when an open-sided tram transports visitors through the parkland.

More than just a Zoo

  • Chiang Mai Zoo was establish in 1974 by Mr. Harold Mason Young an American missionary who came to Thailand as a volunteer to teach survival skill to soldiers on Thailand’s border
  • Chiang Mai Zoo is a 200-acre zoo located on 100 Huay Kaew Road, Chiang Mai, Thailand, just north of Chiang Mai University. It is the first commercial zoo in Northern Thailand
  • The Zoo is privately operated and includes a large variety of animals. In addition, it has two large aquariums. On 28 October 2008, the world's longest tunnel aquarium, with a length of 133 metres was opened to the public.
  • Overall, 400 animal species are represented in the zoo including koalas, Humboldt penguins, Cape fur seals, the only rhino in Thailand, hippos, flamingos, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, camels, lions, tigers, Barbary sheep, Malayan tapir, and many types of reptiles. The zoo is also home to two elephants and three giant pandas.
  • Giant pandas Lin Hui and Chuang Chuang arrived at the zoo on 12 October 2003, and are on 10-year loan from China. Their daughter Lin Bing was born at the zoo on 27 May 2009, and was returned to Chinain 2013. Lin Bing is one of just a few giant pandas born in captivity outside of China.
  • Chiang Mai Night Safari is the world's third nocturnal zoo where you will get to see all the zoo animals from the safety of an open sided tram.
  • In some sections of the safari that you drive through the animals like deer, antelope and wildebeests are standing right beside the roadway, but don't worry, all the predator animals are well fenced in!
